Good As New

Wellington's Art Deco fire station is looking as good as new.  It has recently undergone a major refurbishment to bring it up to current earthquake standards.  The building was built in 1937 and is heritage listed.

The clock (in the tower which I've cut off in my drawing) was originally in the Town Hall.  It was moved here when the Town Hall tower was removed as a precaution after the 1931 Hawke's Bay earthquake. The clock was gifted to the city by John Blundell, who owned The Evening Post newspaper.  Sadly, the Town Hall's future in now in question as it requires costly strengthening.
